A swishing sound foretold the coming of another chakram.
Their speed and hard-to-predict trajectory was deadly in the chaotic battlefield, since no one knew for sure who was targeted, and where and when the attack would come from.
The pirate who saw it coming his way barely dodged it in time, but as he turned to where it came from, anticipating a second one, a loud metallic sound resounded behind him and the same chakram returned to cut him in half from behind.
His rapidly fading consciousness as he fell down caught with Spiritual Sense the presence of a beauty with a spear and three shields floating around her, impaling her opponent who lost his posture while evading another chakram, retrieving one of the floating shields from the position to bounce the chakram.
Shen Min flew past Bi Rui, catching her chakram, as both beauties exchanged looks, seemingly confirming that the maneuver they came up with after she got these shields was effective, and proceeded to their next opponents.
“This damned array! What’s wrong with this thing!!! Open up!”, another pirate was among the many who were now attacking the three barrier arrays that were initially used to trap the Beast of Burden in this area. The talismans all of the pirates had on them were supposed to let them go freely through it, but now it seemed to be sealed off. He then had to defend an attack from one of the Imperial Guards, who were corralling those trying to flee and methodically finishing them off.
“Master’s reverse control of arrays and formations is a scary thing”, Hua Ziyan noted while overwhelming her two opponents with Spiritual Fists, glancing toward Lian Zhiqiu who was innocently standing on the balcony of the vessel with the beauties who didn’t join the fight.
“Indeed, to have your own formations and arrays turn against you is a tricky position to be in, I certainly wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of that”, Nie Xiwang nodded, as her swords and spare weapons she took out this time moved in orderly fashion, methodically exploiting the weaknesses in defence of her two opponents.
“I think I would be more scared to face those two”, Wu Mengqi jokingly mumbled under her nose, as the number of attacks both Hua Ziyan and Nie Xiwang made simultaneously was simply too vast to counter, even if their styles of combat were completely different, as Hua Ziyan’s attacks relied on sheer brute force, mass and continuity, while the Blade Empress was more methodical and calculating, constructing her attacks in a way that created openings and then using them.
It was the two of them who led the initial charge and completely broke the pirates’ ranks, allowing others to actively exploit the chaos they created.
The pirate that Wu Mengqi was fighting, however, wasn’t too sure he had it any better than those fighting Hua Ziyan or the Blade Empress, since her sword movement made it hard to predict, like a dance of tree leaves caught by a whimsical wind.
He saw two of his fellow pirates being caught off guard by these irregular attacks and sword patterns, and receiving injuries that led to them being swiftly cut down shortly afterward.
At the same time, he saw that fleeing was futile, his last bit of desperate hope was to catch this woman as a hostage. In fact it was the thought of all that still fought with the beauties.
Those fighting Cao Xiang quickly found out that doing so in this heavy rain was a hard task. The former Pirate Queen was one of the few in the Dao Family, who awakened an Elemental Attribute after advancing into the Seven Profound Realms. Though her control of Water Qi was still lacking in experience, there were signs of using pressurized water as cutting blades that were very reminiscent of Wu Long’s style.
Combined with her long curved sword, and the difficulty in detecting water blades forming all around in this weather, her opponents found fighting her hardly any easier than with others.
Her daughter’s two curved swords were shorter, but far more nimble and her style of using them was far more aggressive, which was why she used the same Elemental Attribute as her mother in a completely different way, compensating her defense with large volumes of water swirling around her at all times. Since she moved forward at high speeds, from afar her movements looked like a floating river, or a water dragon moving through the air.
Sui Luxiao’s opponents rarely lasted long as well, as none of them were able to withstand the soft power of her iron fan, none of the pirates being particularly sophisticated fighters and thus not understanding how the power of her attacks continued to grow with every exchange of weapons, until it was too much to handle. Especially since frost covered the pirates’ weapons and hands as they fought her, making their attacks, defences and movements frigid and thus more vulnerable to her ‘flowing’ attacks.
Madam Liang calmly drew on her smoking pipe held in her left hand, and sent out a line of herbal smoke forward in a relaxed pose, her right arm was held horizontally below her chest, hand forming a fist, with three long steel needles held in between her fingers, pointing to the side as it supported the elbow of the arm that held the smoking pipe.
It was strange seeing this sight amid the chaotic battle, but the one she was facing was watching it with hazy vision that blurred and multiplied her figure, and had no time to think about whether it was strange or not.
He also long since abandoned any thoughts of how beautiful she looked, and hardly thought this woman was harmless, as several dead pirates who were with him not long ago and long steel needles sticking out of his shoulder and arm proved.
He could feel his consciousness slipping away, different poisons from the clouds of poisonous smoke that blended with illusions and hallucinations he fought with before, and from the needles circulating through his body were slowly reaping his life.
Feng Yi’s arrows prevented the pirates from surrounding or sneaking up on the beauties fighting in close combat, as well as shot down any pirate on the battlefield that showed an opening.
While Wei Lan stood by her side, thwarting any who rightly decided to target an archer. Though she used her usual style of fighting even though she too awakened an Elemental Attribute. Her attribute, however, was Earth, which she was not yet accustomed to using, and thus had not yet decided on how to incorporate into combat.
At the same time, two shadows were picking one by one those stronger pirates who held out against any of the beauties. As soon as anyone of the Wu Family struggled with their opponent, that pirate’s throat was slit from behind or their heart was pierced by a dagger, with no way to defend themselves from something they couldn’t even see coming.
“You can go join, you know, I alone am more than enough here”, Fen Baihu said as she watched Wu Long’s fight rather than the one his beauties fought. Though as a Celestial Fox, it didn’t matter in which direction her eyes were turned to, as she perceived everything happening in the vicinity.
“I prefer to give the girls some room to gain more experience”, Ye Ling smiled, “It’s also why I asked Cui’er to sit this one out”
“Ehe, if Sister Ling asks, how can I say no?”, Gong Cui chuckled, though it was visible that she was quite proud of being asked to stand down for the fear of robbing others of experience. After all, it was an admission that her participation would drastically change the landscape of the fight in their favor, which was true because of the nature of her abilities.
“I have to focus on those arrays”, Lian Zhiqiu shrugged her shoulders, even though the ladies around knew it wasn’t something that prevented her from moving or participating in the fight.
“Unfortunately I can’t join either. Sister Shen Min is amazing, to fight in the state we are in. For me it is still quite risky”, Xue Bing shook her head as well, knowing full well that even her passive Cold Qi aura was dangerous, and having little control over it at this time, it was risky to fight alongside her Dao Sisters.
“Hmm~ I suppose in your case that’s true”, Fen Baihu nodded, vividly remembering that even she felt danger from that cold aura.
“Min’er said her physique’s effects were unknown even to her, but unlike yours the risks of losing control over it were quite mild. Same for me, I am yet unable to peer into the essence of my physique, but by all looks of it, it doesn’t have such an overwhelming effect. So it is you who are the amazing one for being able to bring such a powerful physique under control like this”, Luo Mingyu smiled toward Xue Bing, as the latter answered with a mild smile as well.
Song Lingfei, standing a bit to the side, watched the battle with an introspective gaze, seemingly taking in and learning by observing. It was Wu Long who told her to not hurry with a choice of combat style, and try to concentrate on awakening her bloodline’s abilities for the time being. So for now, just seeing the others fight was her way of gaining experience.
Gong Liwei next to her was still in the Mortal Transcendence Realm, and thus wasn’t qualified to join in. But even if she was in the Seven Profound Realms, she hardly could keep up with the beauties who were fighting as she was now, since her skills included a rather ordinary sword technique. Though when she asked Ye Ling for guidance, the latter was rather cryptic, saying that it was in her interests to be patient for a little longer.
Cai Yin, similarly had no meaningful combat skills, as a Soul Cultivator in her knowledge was only capable of a supporting role in combat, but after learning of the wider world, she instinctively knew that there were likely many paths that a Soul Cultivator could take, and thus was also searching for the opportunity to learn more.
Yu Huan, on the other hand, had more than enough strength to participate in the fight, but as someone whose only interests lied in the Dao of Alchemy, she wasn’t eager to engage in combat. That did not mean she couldn’t fight if it came to it, as she regularly participated in training with her Dao Sisters, and experienced essentially real combat within Fen Baihu’s Mystic Realm, possessing formidable strength on par with the stronger members of the Dao Family.
Yuanfen was the only one whose thoughts no one could even remotely guess, her gaze always following Wu Long. But even if she looked naive, she didn’t flinch when the skin on the palm of his hand broke and blood dripped from from the handle of the saber, seemingly understanding it was inconsequential to him, and that he was in no danger, just as the others did.
Neither did she react when his opponent fled, her calm gaze still simply reflecting Wu Long’s figure as he floated in the air amid the storm that started to suddenly and rapidly calm down.
