“You know~ Wu Long is so~ handsome~”, Gong Cui spoke with a dreamy expression, her face resting on both hands which made her cheeks appear slightly wider.
“Yes, Cui’er, I noticed that”, Gong Liwei nodded while her hands were grinding dried herbs with pestle and mortar into fine dust. After they were reunited, she often made this paste in which her little sister soaked her fingers if they were sore after training on her Zither.
“And he’s also kind, and strong, and gentle, and generous…”, Gong Cui continued, her eyes often glancing to her older sister’s side profile.
At times like this it was very apparent that Gong Liwei had quite a traditional noble lady upbringing unlike Gong Cui who lived in the Profound Music Palace since quite a young age. The image of a refined young lady was quite striking, looking elegant even while doing such a simple thing as grinding herbs.
“Yes, I heard you say that, and witnessed it myself”, Gong Liwei continued moving her hands, her voice sounding a bit monotone, much like the sound of the pestle rubbing against the mortar in circular pattern.
“He is just a dream man~”, Gong Cui added in a singing tone.
“…”, Gong Liwei didn’t answer anything to that, already too familiar with her little sister’s tactics.
This conversation happened many times now, popping up periodically. At first, Gong Liwei thought that Gong Cui was simply admiring her beloved, and just couldn’t stop talking about him. She thought it was adorable and felt happy for her little sister.
But gradually it dawned on her that there was an ulterior motive to this. By now she knew too well it was a part of Gong Cui’s “win-win-win strategy”, though she didn’t know its name of course.
“Buu~”, Gong Cui’s patience ran short, which happened quite quickly as she openly showed her frustration, “Just admit it!”
“I am admitting it, Cui’er”, Gong Liwei smiled while continuing her work.
“Ahhhnn~”, Gong Cui groaned and lay back on the bamboo floor, spreading her hands and feet, making a sea star shape.
“That’s unlady-like Cui’er. Even if this is this kind of flooring it isn’t proper to lay in such a pose”, Gong Liwei spoke calmly while still focused on what she was doing, a light smile playing on her lips since she found this behavior adorable and didn’t really expect her little sister to listen. It was more of a reflex for her to observe such things as lady manners.
“Say…!”, some kind of brilliant idea came to Gong Cui’s mind, lighting her eyes as she raised her upper body in a sudden jolt, “…if Wu Long was to make moves toward you-…”
“And why would he do that?”, Gong Liwei almost laughed as the mere idea that Wu Long would be swayed by her was preposterous to her.
However, she inwardly noted with caution that it seemed like Gong Cui finally decided to change tactics after almost a year and try to attack from different angle. Thus she slightly panicked that the Music Daoist would try to advertise her to Wu Long, interrupting her as her voice lost its monotone quality for the first time.
“Because you’re beautiful? And kind~ a bit naggy though – but very nice on the inside~, and you’re very ladylike~ maybe slightly too focused on how a refined lady should behave but-…”
“Well thank you for the praise and extreme honesty”, Gong Liwei began slightly laughing, not able to keep a straight face at such a description.
She wasn’t offended since she knew Gong Cui too well to take any of it as an insult, moreover she could feel how genuinely her little sister loved her even in those words. Though the contrast of Gong Cui’s descriptions for Wu Long and her did almost bring her to tears with laughter as her hands finally stopped their work, shaking from laughing.
She then turned to Gong Cui after the bout of laughter passed, a gentle smiling expression appearing on her face.
“Cui’er, thank you, seriously. But what would it matter if I admitted how wonderful of a person he is? Yes, it’s hard to not fall for such a man. But what would that amount to? Think about it, why would he look my way? Everyone around him is exceptional in one way or another. Me… my cultivation would’ve already stopped permanently if it wasn’t for him, and my talent seems to have reached its peak. I don’t have anything to offer him, nor do I excel in anything in particular”, she opened up, deciding to have a slightly more sincere and serious talk before Gong Cui really thought about trying to persuade Wu Long this time.
“Y-you know about herbs”
“Haha, a hobby of a noble lady… compared to Lady Yu, a genius alchemist it is just a trifle thing”, Gong Liwei shook her head with a slightly bitter chuckle.
She didn’t like thinking this way, but being surrounded by people who showed such extreme levels of excellence was not easy for someone who struggled with a meager and humble talent.
Even now, she used almost all of her time, far more than anyone around, to meditate, but her rise in cultivation was still far outpaced by others and the difference was likely to only continue to grow. She could also not exclude a chance of encountering another Saturated Dantian in the future since Wu Long confirmed that it was possible to experience it multiple times.
At the same time, she struggled with the idea of being so dependent on Wu Long and Gong Cui without being able to do anything meaningful in return.
Aside from putting effort into cultivating, she was constantly in search of an area in which she could produce some kind of results.
Asking Ye Ling for guidance with a sword was only part of it.
She tried studying herbs more from Yu Huan, but ultimately had to admit that even though she did have a good understanding in that field, she had no talent for alchemy since she could not cultivate an Alchemy Flame.
She also tried to research Symbol Arts since it relied the least on talent, but it proved to be not something she could excel at either.
She knew she was not fit for Music Dao since long ago, was not a talent in fighting even if one ignored her inferior cultivation realm, did not possess a powerful mind like Luo Mingyu or Nie Xiwang, or even average Dao Cultivator to pursue the mysteries of Dao.
The most she was praised for is for her skills in gardening as she helped Wei Lan, but that hardly counted for a talent.
Despite all of that, she did not give up or believe she should whine about not being talented. Nor did she believe she herself had no value even if she didn’t find something she excelled at. Her mind was still set on doing the best she could, and strive to improve herself in any way she could. And she did put in the effort.
But it did not mean that she did not have moments of weakness when it all felt futile. It did not mean that sometimes, seeing how brightly those she looked at up close shined it did not momentarily blind her into thinking that maybe she could also move at the same pace and then despair after stumbling on the spot right after. And it did not mean, that when she felt some kind of flutter in her heart toward Wu Long, she didn’t find herself lacking to face those feelings.
She sighed, seeing Gong Cui’s expression, and standing up approached her little sister, then sitting back down near her to give her a hug.
“I’m sorry Cui’er, I shouldn’t have said it like that, but you understand what I mean, right?”, she spoke in a soft tone as Gong Cui meekly nodded, hugging her back.
The two sisters hugged for a bit, before the older one refreshed the mood by announcing the herbal paste was ready, adding some water to the ground down herbs and guiding her little sister to soak her hands in the mixture.
