Outside the hospital ward corridor.
Bishop Jon stood at a distance, while Du Wei leaned against the wall of the corridor, making a video call with Alex.
On the smartphone screen.
Alex seemed to have just woken up, lazily lying in bed.
She casually asked, “Baby, how are things on your end? Are you coming back tomorrow?”
To her, her boyfriend’s departure from New York was yesterday morning’s news, and she was unaware of what her boyfriend had gone through in the past night.
And Du Wei replied somewhat helplessly, “It’s mostly resolved. I hadn’t expected things to progress so quickly, but I probably won’t be able to return tomorrow. I’m currently in Esselgreen and need to catch a plane to the Church Headquarters in the afternoon.”
"Ah? Why?”
Alex felt a bit annoyed. They had just made their relationship official not long ago, and she’d managed to endure the business trip since it was only two days—a tolerable wait.
But inexplicably, he had to go to Church Headquarters now?"You’re not going on a pilgrimage, are you?”
Her tone was full of strangeness. Though she had accepted the fact that her boyfriend was an Exorcist, she didn’t want him to turn into a devotee who had only the Lord on his mind.
For a woman, her man should only consider her as the most perfect one.
Du Wei coughed, glancing over at Jon in the distance, to ease his embarrassment.
Then, he said hurriedly, “I’m not going on a pilgrimage, it’s just that I’ve run into a bit of trouble and must make a trip to the Church.”
He didn’t want Alex to be too involved.
However, Alex frowned, asking calmly, “Baby, every time you say ‘a bit of trouble,’ it turns out to be a huge problem. Tell me the truth, has something happened?”
She added, “Don’t lie to me, or else, just wait and see.”
Her tone was very serious…
Seeing this, Du Wei could only say helplessly, “How should I put this? It’s just that I’ve attracted too many Evil Spirits, and then I became a hunter. The Church has a special stance toward hunters. In the past, hunters were restricted, but now things have improved a lot. That’s basically it.”
On the other end of the call.
Alex opened her mouth, not knowing what to say.
After what seemed like a long while, she suddenly pounded the headboard. With a bang, the phone screen shook.
"Are you saying the Church might lock you up? Wasn’t it supposed to be a business trip? What’s this about being a hunter? You’re going to drive me crazy…”
Du Wei hurried to reassure her, “Don’t worry, my dear. I’m certain nothing will happen to me. There are people inside the Church who will help me!”
Alex cursed angrily, “When you left, you also said nothing would happen!”
It was clear she was very angry.
And the reasons for her anger were mostly concern and dissatisfaction.
This made Du Wei even more embarrassed. He didn’t know how to explain, and although it would be easy for him to fabricate a well-intentioned lie, if Alex were to find out later, it would surely make things worse.
The relationship could be affected, and most of all…
Alex was trained, and could easily take on three or four men like him—no problem at all…
Facing a woman who’s angry out of concern, trying to keep her calm was almost impossible.
"Dear, please don’t be angry. I’m sure there won’t be any trouble.”
Du Wei once again gave his guarantee, yet Alex didn’t believe him at all.
She cursed at the screen rudely, “Shut up, jerk. Didn’t I tell you from the start? Why do you always try to leave me out when you’re in trouble?”
"Mr. Du Wei, I don’t think your calm and rational mind fails to realize that seeking help from your girlfriend in such times is the right thing to do. Or do you think it’s shameful to do so?”
A torrent of scolding, completely unreserved.
Du Wei was not angry, he just helplessly said, “I don’t want our relationship to be tainted with too many interests, like for achieving objectives, how I might use you…”
Alex was angered into laughter, “You call this using me? I’m your girlfriend, if I don’t help you, who will? Are you planning to find someone else?”
"The Church, right? I’m getting on a plane right now!”
"My dad told me he has donated a lot to the Church. If the Church doesn’t show respect, I will let them know what the wrath of the Wittebach family is like.”
Alex became assertive, leaving no room for doubt, and she hung up the phone directly.
And Du Wei looked at the phone screen, his expression extremely complicated.
There was touch, guilt, but more than anything, he was at a loss.
Was the situation really that serious?
Given the current state of the Church, as well as Jon and Slivka’s attitude, they would not likely detain me.
Thinking this.
Du Wei turns to look at Jon standing in the distance, stuffs the phone into his pocket, and quickly walks over.
"What’s the matter, Mr. Du Wei?”
Jon was puzzled, “Did you have a fight with your girlfriend?”
Du Wei shook his head, “No, it’s just that my girlfriend is going to take a flight to the Church. Based on her personality, she’s probably already on her way.”
Jon asked in surprise, “Why?”
Du Wei had no choice but to explain, “I told her about my current situation, and she’s worried about me, so…”
Jon’s face darkened, “Forget it… let her go, nothing bad will happen anyway. If those old men at the Church find out the young miss of the Wittebach family is coming their way, they’ll probably leap out in excitement.”
Du Wei was puzzled, “Is the Wittebach family on good terms with the Church?”
Actually, he didn’t know much about Alex’s family, only some vague mentions by her.
Jon looked meaningfully at Du Wei, and said slowly, “Whether their relationship is good or not, I am not in position to say, but your girlfriend’s family… they are truly wealthy…”
Hearing this, Du Wei almost understood. He rubbed his forehead, finding the situation ridiculously funny.
Going in circles, the Church’s favorable attitude towards me seems to have been greatly influenced by Alex’s family’s prestige.
In other words, without my knowledge, I’ve been benefiting from their wealth the whole time?
If that’s the case, from the first time I met Alex and we started seeing each other, the Church definitely would have instantly sent someone to solve my problems.
There wouldn’t have been so many troubles…
After a while, Du Wei spoke in a complex tone, “Being wealthy is really great…”
Jon agreed, “Being wealthy is truly great indeed. Even the welfare of the exorcists is invested by these top-tier families. Otherwise, just relying on donations from believers, the Church could not have developed at all.”
"Alright, Mr. Du Wei, we need to set off for the Church now. Also, I’ll make a call to the people on that end. I believe this trip to the Church for you will be very pleasant…”
