First Immortal of the Sword

Chapter 2210 - The Celestial Trials

Chapter 2210 – The Celestial Trials

“Do you know his name and surname, and which of my incarnations he was?” Su Yi asked.

He could already narrow it down. He’d fused with his ninth through fifth incarnations’ Dao Imprints already. He hadn’t fused with his fourth incarnation, Yi Daoxuan, but he knew a little about his origins.

Yi Daoxuan had waged war in the God Domain and perished at the hands of the gods, just as Li Fuyou had.

According to Li Fuyou, Yi Daoxuan had been cursed throughout the ages as the most heinous sinner of the God Domain. They called him the greatest devil in its history!

The enmities of his lifetime involved the ancient ‘struggle of the orthodoxies.’

But Li Fuyou also made it clear that Yi Daoxuan’s bad reputation only began after his death. After they killed him, the gods “overturned a basin of shit on his head” and blamed him for everything.

History was written by the winners. After Yi Daoxuan was defeated in the “struggle of the orthodoxies,” it was the gods who wrote all existing records of his life.

The owner of that mysterious voice couldn’t be Yi Daoxuan, but he couldn’t possibly be his first incarnation, either.

That left only his second incarnation or his third incarnation!

“He’s your third incarnation. His name is…” Grandmaster Bodhi had only just started to speak when that mysterious voice rang out.

“If he lives, I’ll naturally tell him my name myself, but if he dies, he isn’t worthy of learning my name!”

Su Yi’s gaze focused.

Grandmaster Bodhi maintained a warm smile. “Have you perhaps already completed your preparations?”

“I have.” Su Yi’s third incarnation’s clear voice resounded once more. “He’s free to enter the Nine Great Celestial Trials at any time.”

“Excellent.” Grandmaster Bodhi said with a gratified smile. “Regardless of the outcome, I’m no longer worried that Fellow Daoist Su will suffer unfair treatment.”

“’Unfair treatment?’” Su Yi’s third incarnation’s voice was suddenly tinged with mockery. “Since when has fairness existed in this world?

“But you’re right. The Laws of the Nine Great Celestial Trials will ensure that no outside power can influence or disrupt the competition. And I will fulfill my promise: So long as he survives, I won’t make any further trouble for him.”

Grandmaster Bodhi inclined his head. “Very well.”

He turned to look at Su Yi. “Do you have anything to say, Fellow Daoist?”

Su Yi shook his head. Inwardly, he felt rather strange. If my third incarnation remains, then where did the Dao Imprint suppressed by the Sword of the Nine Hells come from? What’s going on here?

I’m sure there are mysteries behind it, but I can sense my third incarnation’s enmity for me. There’s no way he’ll give me a satisfactory answer even if I ask.

“It’s settled, then,” said Grandmaster Bodhi. “I’d like to have a private conversation with Fellow Daoist Su. Fellow Daoist, please give us some privacy.”

“Very well.” That mysterious voice rang out once more. “But first, I’m curious. Fellow Daoist, you do not belong in our spacetime, yet your remnant will has forcefully intervened in today’s proceedings. Aren’t you worried that your true body will suffer a backlash?”

Grandmaster Bodhi smiled. “I’ve already grasped the mysteries of Eternity, and I’ve risen above the River of Destiny to realize true, unfettered freedom.”

Su Yi’s third incarnation fell silent. A long time passed before he said, “Should the opportunity arise, I’ll go visit you.”

Grandmaster Bodhi just smiled in response. Then, he turned to Su Yi and said, “This time, your third incarnation has really left. There’s no denying it; he really is an extraordinary existence.”

Su Yi smiled and said, “The stronger he is, the better. Later, when I defeat him, it’ll prove that the path I now walk is far beyond his. Even now, were we to fight at the same level of cultivation, I’m afraid… he’d be far from a match for me.”

These calm, understated words were full of deep-seated confidence.

Grandmaster Bodhi mulled that over. “You two are ultimately the same person. Wouldn’t it be better to resolve your differences?”

Su Yi smiled. “He and I are both reincarnations. Only one of us is destined to live in the end.”

Grandmaster Bodhi was briefly stunned. “It’s true. If the natural order of reincarnation returns to the world, it will reconnect the past, present, and future. Your third incarnation… will no longer be able to exist in the present day.”

Spacetime was in turbulence, and the natural order had crumbled. This had led to all manner of unbelievable circumstances.

Were turbulent space corrected and the natural order rebuilt, everything would return to its original course. Then, everyone and everything not meant to exist were sure to vanish.

However, both Su Yi and Bodhi knew that none of that would be possible anytime soon. An age of darkness and upheaval would soon descend upon the River of Epochs!

No one knew what would become of the world in the end, or whether or not it was possible to restore the natural order of reincarnation.

“There’s something I don’t understand, and I hope you can enlighten me,” said Su Yi, giving voice to the question he’d had all this time. “What would have happened if you hadn’t intervened today?”

Bodhi smiled; it seemed he’d anticipated that Su Yi would ask this. “If I hadn’t intervened, someone else would have.

“Who?”

“The River Lord.”

Su Yi was stunned, but a moment later, it all made sense. “Ah, so it would have been that old-timer.”

The River Lord certainly seemed like an unassuming, dirty old man, but in truth, he’d always watched over the River of Epochs. He was essentially the god overseeing the alternations of the epochs!

The Path of the Ancient Gods was part of the River of Epochs, and it was the River Lord who’d protected the Epoch Spark all this time. It thus seemed obvious that the River Lord knew the Path of the Ancient Gods like the back of his hand.

He’d even warned Su Yi of the dangers of this expedition before he entered the Path of the Ancient Gods.

“So you’re saying that if you hadn’t appeared, the River Lord would have resolved the danger for me?” asked Su Yi.

“Exactly,” said Grandmaster Bodhi. “But he most likely wouldn’t have intervened in the enmity between you and your third incarnation. He would simply have seen you safely to the Celestial Trials.”

Su Yi couldn’t help but be curious. “Fellow Daoist, you are not of this spacetime, so why do you know all this?”

Grandmaster Bodhi smiled. “When you enter Eternity, you grasp the logic of the heavens and the Grand Dao. You can perceive mysteries others can’t simply by exerting your will.”

Su Yi couldn’t help but be astonished. He sighed, “It’s truly too wondrous for words.”

“Another day, I’m sure that you too will reach the River of Destiny,” said Grandmaster Bodhi. “When the time comes, I suspect you won’t find it strange. All of this will seem perfectly ordinary to you, even trivial.”

The two of them chatted a while longer before Su Yi decided to set off and challenge the Nine Great Celestial Trials.

But first, he went looking for Luo Xuanji.

“Fellow Daoist, when I leave the Path of the Ancient Gods, I’ll be sure to help you realize your goal. Please wait here for now.”

Luo Xuanji nodded.

……

There was a massive city at the heart of the Ancient God Domain.

There were nine divine towers built here. Each represented a trial, and collectively, they were known as the Nine Great Celestial Trials.

The city had no gates; it was completely surrounded by impenetrable walls. The sky above it was covered in chaos clouds.

The clouds were a manifestation of the Laws. Not even Master Gods could pass through them!

An ancient ritual ground had been built in front of the massive city. This was the only entrance to the Nine Great Celestial Trials.

When Grandmaster Bodhi and Su Yi arrived, they saw numerous people waiting there for them. Their leader was none other than the Lingyu Spirit Monarch!

His companions were a group of nine men and two women. Each had an extraordinary, transcendent bearing. It was obvious at a glance that these were no ordinary people.

It was to the point that when Su Yi saw them, he felt almost as if he were looking at birds of a feather. They actually reminded him of himself!

He couldn’t help but be surprised. Where did these people come from? They’re actually this exceptional?

Grandmaster Bodhi’s eyes flashed. “I see he’s arranged competitors for you. From the look of them, the nine of them really are exceptional.”

Su Yi inclined his head. If even someone like Grandmaster Bodhi called them exceptional, they were naturally far beyond the average genius.

Meanwhile, the Lingyu Dao Monarch suddenly whipped around and pointed at Su Yi. “Everyone, take a good look at him. That’s the opponent you must defeat.”

Whoosh!

Nine pairs of eyes locked onto Su Yi. Some had gazes as sharp as swords. Others had gazes as deep as an abyss, or as tranquil as the waters of an ancient will, or as cold and hard as ice.

Su Yi disregarded their gazes completely and said to Grandmaster Bodhi, “Many thanks for your assistance today, Fellow Daoist. Should the opportunity arise, I’ll be sure to repay you.”

Grandmaster Bodhi said warmly, “I was simply doing my duty. My little disciple is inextricably involved in the karmic ties behind all this. In any event, you needn’t take such trivialities to heart, Fellow Daoist.”

He’d only just said this when one of the nine figures stepped forward and approached Su Yi. His features were steely and firm, and his thin frame was covered in the plainest of clothing.

“My name is Jian Xingyun,” said the man, his demeanor as steady as a mountain. Every word was pronounced slowly and clearly. “I’m going to give the trials my all, heedless of life and death. You’d best be careful!”

With that, he turned and left.

His gait was calm and unhurried, yet full of imposing, oppressive power.

Su Yi laughed, entirely unperturbed, then looked at the other eight. “Do you have anything to say to me? If so, you might as well get it over with now.”

Their expressions shifted, but none of them responded.

The Lingyu Dao Monarch ordered, “You can begin.”

“Got it!”

Jian Xingyun and the other eight immediately entered the ancient ritual grounds and vanished without a trace.

“Fellow Daoist, what do you think of the nine opponents he prepared for you?” Bodhi asked with great interest.

Su Yi smiled. “I can tell that they’re all unparalleled figures.”

When the Lingyu Dao Monarch heard this casual assessment, he snorted coldly. “Unparalleled, huh? Let me tell you: all nine of them are unmatched sons and daughters of fortune, the greatest geniuses of their respective epoch civilizations! We combed through over a hundred epoch civilizations before choosing the nine of them.

“Their strength is enough to astonish all other experts of the same cultivation, no matter their epoch of origin! How could the word ‘unparalleled’ be sufficient to describe them?

With that, the Lingyu Dao Monarch turned and left.

“The sons of daughters of fortune of their respective epoch civilizations, huh? It seems that your third incarnation has used no small number of taboo methods to ‘save’ these experts who should have vanished with their epochs of origin,” Bodhi said thoughtfully. “Fellow Daoist, do you think they’re worthy of being your opponents?”

Su Yi didn’t even pause to think. He answered in a single sentence.
