Chapter 4697: Death
At that very moment, the man in green trailed behind the blue-robed leader of their group. “Senior Brother,” he remarked, a hint of doubt in his voice, “could it be that the shopkeeper wasn’t entirely truthful with us? We’ve searched all this way, and there’s been no sign of those three children.”
“Then we keep looking,” the blue robed man replied, his voice slightly deeper, a cold determination hardening his gaze. “They’re just a few children. As long as they remain within this city, we will undoubtedly find them! Anyone who dares to lay a hand on a member of the Heaven’s Sun Sect is making an enemy of our entire sect. We cannot allow such insolence to go unpunished!”
“Senior Brother is absolutely right,” the man in green agreed vehemently. “Those three little brats are unbelievably arrogant. Once we find them, we’ll definitely make them pay dearly—” His sentence was abruptly cut short by a sharp scream, and he suddenly collapsed to the ground.
“Junior Brother!”
The blue robed man whirled around, startled. His face paled visibly, a flicker of fear momentarily eclipsing his anger as he saw his companion lying motionless on the ground. Instinctively, his eyes darted around, searching for any sign of an attacker.
The disciples following closely behind quickly surrounded their fallen comrade, drawing their swords and scanning their surroundings warily, desperate to identify the unseen assailant. However, as they looked around, they noticed that everyone else on the street – even those browsing in the shops and taverns lining either side – were turning their heads to stare at them, their faces etched with surprise and confusion.
Clearly, no one had anticipated that amidst their casual stroll and conversation, one of their group would suddenly be struck down, and the killer hadn’t even revealed themselves.
“Senior Brother, how is he?” one of the disciples asked, a tremor of panic in his voice.
“He’s dead,” the blue-clothed man stated grimly, swallowing hard to suppress the shock and growing unease churning within him. His eyes were fixed on the small, almost imperceptible wound on the man in green’s forehead. There wasn’t even any blood, yet his companion was lifeless.
Hearing the grim confirmation, the other disciples were stunned into silence. They crowded around the body, noticing the tiny wound on his forehead, utterly bewildered as to what kind of weapon could have caused such a swift and silent death.
“Carry him back. Let’s go!” The blue robed man finally commanded, his voice tight as he ordered them to return the body to their sect. They had all come out together for a seemingly simple outing, and now that one of them was dead, they dreaded the inevitable explanations upon their return. The sudden and inexplicable death had shaken him deeply. He couldn’t shake the feeling that it was somehow connected to the three children. Why else would everyone else be unharmed, while only the man in green had been targeted?
Could it be that the children had powerful protectors watching over them? Had these protectors sensed their malicious intent towards the children and eliminated their junior brother as a warning?
The group didn’t dare to linger any longer. They quickly lifted the body and hurried away, their minds racing with the need to report this unsettling incident to their sect elders immediately.
Meanwhile, completely oblivious to the silent retribution that had just unfolded, the three children continued their leisurely exploration of the city, diligently storing their newly acquired treasures into their expansive spatial storage. Perhaps the sheer volume of their purchases, all disappearing into seemingly thin air, had not gone unnoticed, drawing the attention of less scrupulous individuals.
“These little brats must be carrying a fortune on them. We’ve been tailing them for quite a while now, and there are no adults accompanying them, just the three of them. I say we don’t wait for Big Brother to arrive. Let’s just lure them into the alley up ahead and strike!” one of the loose cultivators hissed, his eyes gleaming with avarice as he watched the three unsuspecting children strolling ahead.
“Let’s just wait for Big Brother! We don’t want to get into any unnecessary trouble,” another loose cultivator cautioned, glancing back down the street and then grinning. “Look, isn’t that Big Brother coming now?”
The small group of opportunistic cultivators turned around and saw a man wearing an ostentatious brocaded robe, a toothpick casually dangling from his lips, swaggering towards them.
