Chapter 1027: Hide and Seek
In that moment, Ling Mo felt as if he had grasped something…
The Ratmen’s attack had come so swiftly that they barely had time to think. But now, pondering over it, why would one Ratman hide? And how did these mindless creatures come up with such a tactic?
“It’s it!” Ling Mo’s focus zeroed in on that psychic light cluster. Just as the tail was about to strike him, a Tentacle shot out towards the psychic light cluster. At that moment, Ling Mo could almost hear his own heartbeat and the sound of psychic energy surging from his mind. Yet, in the next instant, this wondrous sensation vanished, replaced by a violent collision and the ensuing rush of excitement and pain.
Whoosh!
The psychic light cluster was hit by the Tentacle and shuddered violently. Everyone’s ears were suddenly pierced by a sharp wail: “Awooo!”
At the same time, Li Yalin reached out from behind and pulled Ling Mo back, while Xia Na’s Scythe slashed down from the side. But just then, the Ratman’s tail suddenly froze. Its body followed suit, as if it had lost all ability to move. Seizing the opportunity, Xia Na lunged forward, driving her Scythe deep into its mouth and slamming it to the ground.
The other three Ratmen were the same. Though the moment was fleeting, everyone seized the opportunity in their shock. Their fear of these Ratmen drove them to attack every seemingly vulnerable spot on their bodies, so that a few seconds later, when they stepped back, the scene on the ground had become quite gruesome.
Yet even in such a state, these ferocious beasts continued to twitch. To ensure they were truly dead, Ye Kai and the others charged forward in unison, launching another round of frenzied attacks…
“Huff… huff…”
Everyone was breathing heavily. From the moment the Ratmen appeared to now, perhaps less than a minute had passed. But the sense of mortal danger they had felt was unprecedentedly intense…
“What just happened?” Gu Shuangshuang, still shaken, had no idea what had occurred to suddenly pull them out of danger.
However, in the next second, everyone noticed the wailing coming from the Corridor’s corner, and Ling Mo walking towards it. The wailing Dark Shadow had already poked out half a head and a pair of claws. Judging by its size, it was actually smaller than the Ratmen… Though its body hadn’t suffered any harm, it appeared utterly powerless.
“That’s their leader. Or perhaps the Rat King…” Xia Na said, frowning.
“So, these Ratmen were being commanded by the Rat King, and Ling Mo’s attack on the Rat King caused them to malfunction?” Yuwen Xuan continued.
“Seems like it…”
“Their group dynamics are pretty fragile then…” Mu Chen added.
But saying it is one thing; making such a calm judgment in a life-or-death situation is quite another. Others might have chosen to defend themselves or simply evade…
“Ow…”
Ling Mo gradually approached the Rat King, which was clawing at the ground, struggling to crawl forward, seemingly trying to escape. The closer he got, the clearer he could see.
Compared to the Ratmen, the Rat King actually resembled a gray-haired, genuine rat. Its limbs had become thin and elongated, with only its head remaining somewhat normal. Moreover, its nose had transformed into a rat’s snout, and even its eyes had changed. But at the moment, those eyes looked bewildered, clearly affected by a severe psychic shock.
“Listen, I know you can understand human speech…”
As Ling Mo got closer, the Rat King’s gaze suddenly shifted.
In an instant, Ling Mo saw a pair of eyes filled with malice and coldness. Just as he was about to stop speaking, the Rat King lunged forward, opening its mouth to bite his leg. As Ling Mo was about to dodge, a Dark Shadow swept past him, moving so fast that Ling Mo could only vaguely see a blur. 𝐫ÂƝỐΒЕ𝐒
“Watch out!”
The others barely had time to shout before Xia Na and Li Yalin simultaneously flew forward… Their feet left the ground, and they surged ahead, looking more like they were flying…
At the same moment, Ling Mo swiftly sidestepped, clearing the way for the two Female Zombies.
“Clang! Clang!”
With two sharp sounds, the Rat King was pinned heavily against the wall. It spat out a mouthful of blood and glared venomously at Ling Mo and the others. Its tail lay on the ground, not far from Gu Shuangshuang. Clearly, during the brief skirmish, it had identified the weakest among them and was preparing to launch a sneak attack. As for its attempt to bite Ling Mo, it now seemed like another distraction tactic.
Gu Shuangshuang’s face turned pale with fright. Having just escaped the clutches of death and breathed a sigh of relief, she hadn’t expected the Rat King to be feigning all along… Fortunately, the Rat King was noticeably weaker in combat compared to the Ratmen it controlled, so with Ling Mo and the others’ quick reactions, its attack completely failed.
“Did the captain anticipate this?” Zhang Xincheng couldn’t help but gasp and ask.
Mu Chen shook his head with a look of lingering fear: “No idea…”
In truth, he wanted to say that maybe Ling Mo was just being cautious…
“I don’t know anything,” the Rat King coughed twice, speaking first, “There’s no point in asking me anything…” Its voice was dry, but with that rat face, it brought an eerie feeling. If it were just standing in the shadows, it wouldn’t be much different from a regular person.
But as soon as it finished speaking, its eyes suddenly bulged, and it opened its mouth to scream miserably, “Awooo awooo awooo…”
After repeating this a few times, Ling Mo grabbed its head. As its body gradually slumped down the wall, the others stood nearby watching but didn’t approach. To them, it seemed like the Rat King was being tortured to death by Ling Mo, even though the process was actually quite brief.
Once the Rat King’s screams faded, Ling Mo lifted his head, looking directly upwards, “That’s the fourth fragment already. This building’s map is only this much, right…” Thinking of the little girl made him clench his fists involuntarily…
As Ling Mo and his group accelerated their charge upstairs, on a certain floor of the building, two figures were engaged in a chase and evasion…
“Didn’t expect you to be so patient… How long have you been waiting for me there? Five minutes? Or longer?” The little girl covered half her face, smiling as she slowly walked forward. Not far behind her was a wall that had been shattered. Most of the bricks had turned to dust, and the Rebar was broken piece by piece. On one relatively intact brick, there was a small handprint…
“Honestly, if it weren’t for your scent being impossible to disguise, I almost thought you were human. What Zombie uses something like this? Why do you use it? Tell me.” A small amount of blood seeped through her fingers, paired with her innocent smile, it was truly chilling.
At this moment, she suddenly stopped, saying, “My pet is dead.” As she said this, her smile disappeared. But soon, she grinned again, “Actually, it’s fine, because I expected this. And it’s okay, because I’ll soon have a new pet… Sister, where have you run off to now? Come out…”
As the little girl’s voice echoed nearby, a faint sound of breathing came from behind a pillar. Ye Lian clung tightly to the pillar with her Sniper Rifle, her face growing increasingly pale and transparent, listening to the calls while looking down at her palm. It was a polished bullet… Such a sniper bullet could blow a person’s head to pieces, but that little girl…
“Sister, give up. It’s not too late to come out now… Why hold onto human toys while abandoning zombie principles? Sister, where are you?”
The little girl lowered her hand, a blood-red scar on her cheek rapidly healing…
“Ling Mo…”
Ye Lian slowly clenched her fist… Was its defensive capability too strong, or did its reaction speed match the bullet?
What should she do?
Ye Lian reached into her pocket. But at that moment, her pupils suddenly contracted. She swiftly turned her body, peering out from behind the pillar.
Meanwhile, the little girl spoke again… It bent down not far from Ye Lian, curiously picking up a small notebook: “Sister, look what I’ve found? Is it a diary? Did you write it when you were human? Let me see…” The little girl flipped to a page, her tone suddenly surprised, “I guessed wrong… Wait, what’s this? You…”
Ye Lian’s breathing grew more rapid, her eyes gradually covered with a blood-red hue. The bullet in her hand turned to powder under her unconscious grip…
Suddenly, the little girl turned her head sharply, flashing a delighted smile at Ye Lian behind the pillar: “Caught you! Sister…”
In an instant, the black of Ye Lian’s eyes transformed completely into blood-red. This hue extended, filling her sclera with a delicate, incredibly beautiful yet extremely dangerous pattern…
