Chapter 114: I'll Teach You
Xu Qing sat down in front of his computer, ready to search for something about lilies, but as he turned to glance at Jiang He, he suddenly froze.
She nearly dragged him down to her level of intelligence and defeated him there.
Who wouldn’t want to touch something so silky smooth?
It was perfectly normal.
"If you like it so much, I’ll buy two sets. You can wear them as much as you want. Girls like pretty clothes, after all. It’s completely normal. I even think you should change up your style a bit..." Xu Qing suggested.
Jiang He shook her head firmly. “I don’t want to wear them.”
“That’s fine too. I’ll buy them and keep them around. You can wear them whenever you feel like it. I’m telling you, if you pair that with a short skirt—not too short, just showing a bit of your calves—and then wield a sword while performing a set of moves…” Xu Qing trailed off as he started placing an order on Taobao. His imagination ran wild, picturing Jiang He wearing a white shirt and short skirt, pinning him down… No, wait, reverse that—him pinning Jiang He down…
But he couldn’t.
Realizing his physical inferiority, Xu Qing sighed. He glanced at his wrist, recalling their first kiss when she nearly twisted his arm off. She was not someone he could afford to provoke.“What are you doing?” Jiang He asked, looking back at him.
“Practicing martial arts.”
“The news is starting.”
“Oh…”
Xu Qing, who had just gotten into his stance, immediately broke it. He reached under the coffee table for some paper and a pen, sitting in front of the TV as the countdown began.
Jiang He had grown accustomed to watching the news with him. If the internet taught her modern living, then the news offered a broad overview of the world: public welfare, technology, poverty alleviation, diplomacy, and domestic and international affairs. Initially, she found it all baffling, but now, she could understand bits and pieces.
The vast rice fields on screen resembled what she had imagined—large areas of crops ensuring a steady food supply. Unless it rained food from the sky, that would be impossible.
When a fleeting shot of an automated production line appeared, Jiang He used to feel indifferent because she didn’t understand. Now that she recognized more, it struck her as amazing.
“A marvel of craftsmanship,” she murmured.
“Man-made craftsmanship,” Xu Qing corrected her.
Jiang He, sitting cross-legged on the couch, scooted closer to him. “I feel like what you’re doing is similar to what I do.”
“Oh?”
“When I scour auction houses and take notes,” she said, pointing at her little notepad by the computer. “Is what you’re writing similar?”
“More or less. Constant exposure sharpens your instincts. It’s like the saying, ‘The river warms first for the ducks who sense spring.’”
“That’s an interesting phrase…” Jiang He seemed thoughtful.
“It’s from a poem, I think by Su Shi, who lived two or three centuries after you.”
“Oh~”
Jiang He nodded and then asked, “What are modern poems like?”
“You don’t want to know.”
Xu Qing put down his pen, stretching lazily. During the New Year, the news mainly covered mainstream topics, not much of real interest.
Modern poetry…
“Oh great sea, you’re all water?”
“You’re standing on the bridge admiring the scenery, while the people admiring the scenery are looking at you on the bridge… Stuff like that. It’s nothing like the poetry of the past. But why is someone who practices martial arts so curious about poetry?”
“Martial arts are useless.”
“Poetry’s useless too.”
“…”
“Brains. What you need now is brains. Studying builds logical thinking, not just poetic sensibilities… Though, sure, being able to sing can be a career. But don’t box yourself into a single mindset…”
As Xu Qing rambled, he loosened up and began practicing Tangshou Quan earnestly. He had learned moves online: Three Shakes Three Strikes, Galloping Horse Palm, Two Dragons Play with Pearl Grappling Palm, Golden Cat Catches Mouse Hip Palm… Jiang He didn’t know any of these flashy names. Her style was straightforward: sidestepping, shoulder rolling, and stomping with a yell.
Training the breath internally, the muscles and skin externally—though the shouting and stomping were too disruptive, so Xu Qing dropped those parts, focusing on hand techniques instead.
The two formed an oddly harmonious scene: one practicing martial arts in the living room, the other curled up on the couch with a cat, watching the evening news.
“Why are you suddenly into martial arts?” Jiang He asked.
“To fight fire with fire.” Xu Qing gritted his teeth as he swung his palms.
His strikes were weak, incomparable to Jiang He’s prowess.
“… Fire with fire…” Jiang He was growing increasingly regretful about her actions the previous night.
“I was careless last night. I couldn’t bear to hurt you. Otherwise, with one sliding kick…”
Xu Qing finished a set, exhaled, and pointed at Jiang He with a snort before heading to the bathroom to shower.
Being forcibly kissed was one thing. Next time, certain events would definitely not repeat. He was determined to prepare well in advance.
“Want to join me?” Xu Qing suddenly poked his head out of the bathroom. “We’re boyfriend and girlfriend. Save water…”
Seeing Jiang He’s cheeks flush red as she glared at him, he cheerfully shut the door, humming as he undressed.
…
When Jiang He finished her shower and came out steaming, they both sat on the couch to count their New Year red envelopes.
Together, their envelopes totaled over 3,000 yuan, with most of it—unsurprisingly—coming from Jiang He. The little extra came from Xu Qing.
Holding a stack of cash, Jiang He looked a bit lost and pushed it all to Xu Qing.
“This was given by your parents… It’s yours.”
Xu Qing marveled at his parents’ generosity. It had been ages since he’d seen so much cash. The crisp bundle felt amazing to hold, but he passed it back to Jiang He after enjoying it for a moment. “It’s from my parents for my girlfriend. Who else would take it if not you?”
“I didn’t do anything…”
“You kissed me.”
“…”
Jiang He fell silent.
Xu Qing, catching the faint fragrance from her, reached out to pull her closer. When she didn’t budge, he scooted over and hugged her instead. “We’ve moved past just being benefactor and recipient. What’s mine is yours, and what’s yours is mine… Didn’t your second mother sew silver pieces into the hem of your clothes? This money can be your emergency fund. Keep it under… under the bed corner for when you need it.”
“I still owe you a lot of money. We need to keep things clear.”
“We don’t.”
“We do.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“No—fine. Let’s keep it clear. Separate accounts.” Xu Qing gave in.
“You’re overthinking…” His voice lowered as he leaned in close. “Let me teach you how to kiss.”
“Ah?”
“Don’t hit me.” He braced himself.
Jiang He stared at him, wide-eyed. Before she could react, Xu Qing lowered his head, making her tense.
“Close your eyes.”
“…”
Winter Melon the cat glanced up at the two, irritated by the decreasing space, and squeezed out of the way.
“What are you doing?” Jiang He suddenly opened her eyes and looked at his hand.
“...Instinct,” Xu Qing said awkwardly. “Don’t talk. Let’s start over.”
“No way!”
Jiang He bolted, standing on the floor and glaring at him. After a moment, she mumbled nervously, “You’re trying to make me have a baby!”
??
Xu Qing froze. “No.”
“Yes!”
“It’s just a hug. We haven’t even gotten married. How could we have a baby? Come back here for a kiss.”
“No.”
Jiang He kept her gaze on his hands, her eyes darting nervously. Then, with a flurry of steps in her cotton slippers, she fled to her room. “Good night!”
“Hey…”
Xu Qing stared blankly as her door shut.
Did she get it or not?
