Chapter 1709  Healing

Ning and Shara took the horses through the grass, riding atop the uneven land as they made their way further down the side of the forest where the group of prisoners were staying.

To Ning’s surprise, they weren’t staying that far into the forest at all. He had expected them to be deep within it, but they were just past a few trees. They were just far away from the roads, hidden behind multiple bushes.

Ning was about to take the cart inside the forest when the leader explained.

“We stay in there to hide during the day. But at night, we come outside to sleep in the grass. It’s much safer than the forest,” the man said.

“I don’t know if that is true,” Ning said. “I would worry about the snakes.”

“No need to worry about snakes or bugs,” the leader said. “They usually don’t come to where we are. We know exactly what to do to get rid of them.”

Ning gave a curious look. “There are things you can do to get rid of them?” he asked.

“There are a few plants in the forest that if you crush together and leave out, almost all bugs will be repelled by it. On top of just bugs, even snakes, rodents, and all other sorts of creatures get repelled by it.”

“I see,” Ning said. “We slept in the cart most of the time, so I don’t know if that is something the people in our caravan used or not.”

“I wouldn’t doubt if they didn’t know,” the man said. “This was something taught to us in the military.”

Ning nodded. “Anyway, let us talk about all of that later. Have you found any place to take a bath yet?”

“There is a small stream about half an hour that way,” the man pointed even further down the path, opposite to where the road was.

“Good. I have brought you some fresh clothes and soap. Go get yourself washed and wear the new clothes. I will take care of your wounded in that time and Shara here will help cook food for you, assuming you are hungry.”

“We are not necessarily hungry, but food would be good. At least for the sick. The pots you left behind have helped a bit but not a lot. We can only cook so much. Not to mention, most of what we have been eating has been meat and fruits. They need some grains.”

Ning nodded slightly and looked at the men. They were showing signs of losing muscle mass finally, which was surprising to him since that should have begun happening over a week ago. They were still quite fit around that time.

But the man had claimed they hadn’t eaten anything except for the game they found in the forest.

Ning took a quick count of the people that were there. There were 22 people in total. 14 were more or less right. 3 of them were lightly wounded and sick. 3 were severely sick. And 2 were nearly mortally wounded.

They were only kept alive thanks to the few medicines Ning had provided them before he had left the last time. He began helping them.

The leader walked up next to him and crouched down.

Ning paused. “What are you doing?” he asked.d

The man looked confused. “Helping you? You need someone to do the physical work, right?” he asked.

Ning smiled and pulled his left arm out from underneath the cloak. “Did you perhaps not notice that I already have my other arm?”

The man’s eyes went wide in shock. “How…”

“There was a healer in the town. Healed me right up,” Ning said. “You can go take your bath. I can take care of the wounded.”

“Okay,” the man said. Everyone who wasn’t sick or wounded took the soap and clothes and began walking toward the steam that was half an hour away. While they were gone, Ning began his own task of healing the men.

Shara began placing big pots on top of small rocks beneath which fire began roaring from the dried timbers. She poured in water, meat, some grains, and a bit of spice, and cooked it in a single pot.

Ning checked on the sick men first, understanding what they needed. He immediately dissolved the powder medicine in some water and began feeding them slowly. The sick men drank it and went back to laying on the cold hard ground with only a single layer of cloth below them.

Ning pulled them closer toward Shara where they could stay in the warmth of the fire.

Ning helped the other people who were both sick and wounded. He gave the medicine for their sickness and applied some antiseptic cream on their minor wounds.

The ones with major wounds needed better care. They had lost large chunks of their arms and legs, which could not just be healed. They had also lost a lot of blood, so there was that to heal as well.

Ning couldn’t help them as much as he wanted to.

He did what he could, applying the antiseptic cream on their wounds after cleaning the wounds, and applying a fresh wrap around the wounds.

Ning’s actions took him long enough for the food to be cooked. Once it was cooked, he and Shara took out some to eat for themselves or feed the ones that could eat.

The people came back after a fresh back, the dirt and muck on their bodies and faces no longer there. Their hair didn’t look as haggard anymore, and in fact, a few of them even appeared a bit handsome.

They had begun growing light stubble on their head at some point, which either needed to grow more or had to be gotten rid of. As it was, it didn’t look good.

The leader sat down next to Ning and began eating his hot stew, feeling blissful at getting to eat something this good in a long time.

“Thank you,” he said slowly. “You have been an incredible help for my people.”
