Global Beast Mastery: Only I Can See the Hints
Chapter 613 - 613: The Web of DeceitIn the end, Zara followed Charles’s advice. The two of them locked the sealed Serpent Beast Master in Zara’s quarters.
Zara’s quarters were very close to the Empress’s chambers.
This meant that her quarters were quite secure. As long as no major changes occurred within the Serpent Empire, no one would be able to break into her quarters.
Although they had done their best to move as quickly as possible, it still took them quite a long time.
By the time they reached the outer wall of Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis, the battle had already ended.
The Serpent People soldiers were already cleaning up the battlefield.
The way the Serpents looked at Zara and Charles was filled with hostility.
They didn’t even trust Zara anymore.
Zara and Charles immediately sensed this very obvious hostility.
Zara found a friend of hers and asked about the details of what had happened.
“What exactly happened? Who attacked Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis?”
“Desert Goblins. The Desert Goblin tribe closest to Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis launched a surprise attack. Fortunately, our defense was swift enough that they didn’t manage to break through the wall. If those Goblins had breached the wall, the entire oasis would have faced a huge catastrophe.”
Zara’s friend showed signs of fear as they spoke. This indicated that the Desert Goblins’ attack on Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis had indeed been very fierce.
“Just drive them back.”
Zara said with a smile.
Her friend looked at Charles behind her. “Are you still loyal to the Serpent Empire?”
Zara froze when she heard the question.
“Why are you asking that? I have always been loyal to the Serpent Empire and the Empress!” she responded.
“Then why didn’t you come sooner? I heard that when the battle started, you and this human didn’t choose to head to the wall. Instead, you chose to hide.”
Zara was at a loss for words.
She didn’t know how to explain, because what her friend said was indeed the truth.
As she stood there, stunned, Charles suddenly took a step forward and said,
“We had more important matters to attend to. I was investigating the cause of the Empress’s curse explosion. Removing the Empress’s curse is also of utmost importance.”
Charles’s explanation seemed to convince the Serpent.
“If that’s the case, then there’s no problem. However, you must be prepared. High Priest Aldany is very angry. He believes you deliberately didn’t come.”
After saying this, Zara’s friend left.
Before Zara could react, Charles immediately concluded that Aldany was likely planning to make a move again.
“You must stay calm. Aldany will surely make things difficult for us once more. Only by keeping a clear head can we handle his renewed attacks,” Charles quickly reminded Zara.
Zara nodded, seemingly understanding.
Just then, a Serpent messenger quickly approached from the distance.
Upon seeing Zara and Charles, the Serpent messenger quickly said, “Lady Zara, both Regent High Priests are requesting that you and Mr. Charles come immediately. They have very important matters to ask you both.”
Zara seemed slightly distracted and didn’t respond right away.
The Serpent messenger repeated his message.
Still, Zara remained silent.
“We understand. We’ll head to the Great Pyramid right away,” Charles spoke up at last.
The Serpent messenger then left.
“Charles, I feel like we’ll never be able to explain ourselves,” Zara said, her voice tinged with despair.
She had realized that she was caught in the midst of a conspiracy. She also understood that someone was intentionally framing her. However, everything that had happened made her feel that no matter how much she explained, it wouldn’t make a difference.
Charles, his voice resolute, replied, “If we can’t explain ourselves, then we’ll show our strength. Even in the worst-case scenario, we can ensure our own safety.”
His patience had long since run out.
The internal power struggles within the Serpent Empire disgusted him. He didn’t want to waste any more time with them.
If not for Aria and Zara, he would have already taken action and killed Aldany when they had their falling out the last time.
Encouraged by Charles’s words, Zara finally regained her composure.
The two of them made their way to the Great Pyramid.
Inside the Great Pyramid, High Priests Aldany and Kent sat expressionless in the regent’s positions. Behind them were the other Serpent high priests.
Everyone already knew the reason they had been summoned.
This made most of them very nervous.
Some had already witnessed Charles’s strength, and they were deeply concerned that the Serpent Empire’s situation might completely collapse.
Aldany and Kent, the two regent high priests, had just had a heated argument.
High Priest Kent believed that the issue wasn’t a big deal.
Charles, being a human, was an outsider. It was natural that he wouldn’t participate in the defense of Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis.
Zara’s absence from the defense battle was indeed somewhat inappropriate, but she was the Empress’s personal guard. Under normal circumstances, she was supposed to remain by the Empress’s side, and it was not expected that she would participate in the front-line battles.
However, High Priest Aldany believed that the Serpent Empire’s situation was dire. Everyone needed to do everything in their power to fight for the Empire. Therefore, Zara and Charles’s actions should be punished.
Neither of them was able to persuade the other, and because Aldany’s tribe was more powerful, he ultimately succeeded in overpowering High Priest Kent.
“High Priests, Lady Zara and that human have arrived,” the guard at the entrance of the Great Pyramid reported quickly.
“Let them in,” Aldany said coldly.
Soon after, Charles and Zara walked into the center of the Great Pyramid’s Judgment Hall, under the watchful eyes of the numerous high priests.
“You should know why you’ve been called here, right?” Aldany said, casting a fierce glare at Zara and Charles.
“I don’t know. I would still like you to explain clearly,” Charles replied coldly, meeting Aldany’s gaze with a cold look of his own.
Aldany ignored Charles and instead turned his gaze to one of the high priests behind him.
That high priest stood up and carefully recounted Charles and Zara’s actions throughout the day.
“You were clearly doing nothing in Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis. Why didn’t you participate in the battle earlier?” Aldany locked his eyes on Zara.
He had already decided to use Zara as a point of attack.
Zara didn’t respond, so Charles stepped forward and answered.
“We were doing something more important.”
Aldany didn’t respond to Charles; instead, he repeated his question while continuing to look at Zara.
His actions enraged Charles.
“Haven’t I already answered you? Why do you keep asking again? Can’t you understand what I’m saying?” Charles took a few steps forward.
An aura of Frenzy surrounded him, making all the high priests feel an overwhelming sense of threat.
High Priest Kent cleared his throat.
“Charles and Zara were acting together, so either one of them can answer. There’s no need to question Zara alone.”
He was addressing Aldany with these words.
Aldany sneered.
“I’m not foolish enough to trust a human. The only ones we can trust are the Serpent. Only Serpent would never betray the Serpent Empire.”
As soon as Aldany finished speaking, Charles burst into laughter.
“What are you laughing at?! You, a human, have no right to laugh in the Great Pyramid of the Serpent Empire!” Aldany shouted angrily.
The other high priests were also somewhat dissatisfied with Charles’s reaction. However, given the tense atmosphere, they hoped to avoid a direct confrontation with him.
Charles suppressed his laughter. He looked at Aldany coldly and responded with a sharp counter-question.
“As far as I know, ever since the Stellar Empire’s forces entered the Atacama Desert, Serpent tribes have been defecting one by one. To this day, more than 20 Serpent tribes have sided with the Stellar Empire. Now you’re telling me that only the Serpent can be trusted and will never betray the Serpent Empire? Doesn’t that sound a bit ridiculous? Are you living in a dream?”
Charles’s rebuttal left Aldany at a loss for words. He hadn’t expected Charles to come up with such a response so quickly.
But Aldany wasn’t one to back down from his long-planned scheme. He quickly adjusted his emotions and changed his approach.
“Since you say you were handling something more important, then what exactly were you working on?” Aldany continued to question.
“Of course, we were looking for a way to deal with the curse on Her Majesty the Empress. Unlike you, who doesn’t care at all about Her Majesty’s condition. When the curse on Her Majesty exploded, you weren’t even around. What were you doing at that time?”
Charles responded swiftly and then pressed with further questions.
He knew very well that he couldn’t just play defense; he had to keep counterattacking. Only then could he throw Aldany into confusion.
And in the midst of that confusion, he could find the opportunity to thoroughly refute him.
Charles’s questions had the desired effect. Aldany’s expression faltered, and he began to think quickly about how to respond.
The high priests behind Aldany also began murmuring among themselves.
