As he breathed heavily, Arthur’s attention was brought back to reality as he noticed the notifications that popped into his retina. With wide eyes and a mind still pumping with adrenaline, he read the content and was immediately struck speechless.
“Huh…? Human Chimera?” Arthur muttered in disbelief before his eyes slowly moved to the blob creature he just killed. His eyes focused on its features and numerous body parts. He didn’t know how he hadn’t noticed that earlier, but it was perhaps due to the weird color of this monster’s flesh, which was blood-red.
Its limbs… were very human-like.
“Human limbs… Wait, wait, don’t tell me…” Arthur gulped. “Was this thing… a combination of humans?”
The word Chimera was made to describe a mystical creature with many of its body parts being taken from different other creatures and sewed together into a hideous monster. Arthur immediately understood that this was the same case and a strong feeling of disgust filled his heart.
“…” He frowned and averted his eyes from the monster. “What the hell? I want to throw up. What would even create such a hideous thing?”
This was the first time Arthur had come across such a monster. In his head, all monsters in this world were naturally born that way. This was the very first monster he found that was created from the amalgamation of other creatures… In this case, humans.
“Sick bastards…” He spat out. “In any case, I need to go back to Yonathan. This is very alarming. If there is anyone who has an idea, it will be him.”
With that, Arthur made sure to pinpoint the exact location where the corpse was before he turned around and left the area.
‘I will check the description of the Exo-Burst skill later.’
Jumping from one area to another, Arthur crossed his path back to the place where the old man was. After spending some time in this graveyard, Arthur was able to easily navigate it without the need for a guide.
His memory had come in clutch, giving him a very detailed map of the entire area. In a few minutes, he found himself back at the spot where the hideout was.
There, he hurried his steps to the door to get inside, only to stop as he realized something. His hand that reached out for the knob froze and his eyes looked up.
“What are you doing outside, Yonathan?” He asked without looking back.
“I was watching.” The old man said as he stepped out of the darkness and looked at Arthur with a calm expression.
‘He had been behind me this entire time… As expected of him.’ Arthur mused as he looked slightly to the side, feeling rather uneasy. Still, he turned around and faced the old man with a calm look on his face.
“You were watching me?” He raised an eyebrow. “So you have seen that… thing?”
“Yes.” The old man replied. A weird glint flashed across his eyes for a split second that made Arthur frown but it didn’t last long enough for him to understand what it meant.
“As I expected, it didn’t take you long to learn Exo-Burst. Merely two hours after the challenge started.” The man added as he looked down. The way he spoke felt like he was rather amused than shocked.
“Thank you, I guess?”
“You have shattered another record I never thought was possible. Two hours to figure out such a complicated mana usage. I don’t even know what kind of ceiling your talent has.”
“Enough of that stuff. What the hell is that, Yonathan? What did I just kill?” Arthur shook his head as he held his hand up. He wanted a clear explanation of what just happened. Compliments didn’t mean much to him.
“… Sigh.” The old man exhaled a long breath, filled with exhaustion and many other emotions. “Just to clarify, I didn’t send that creature after you… It’s not my creation.”
“… I guess my suspicion was that obvious to you?” Arthur asked back. ‘I couldn’t find any good reason not to be suspicious of this old man. I mean everything about him is still mysterious.’
However, Arthur could hear the honesty in the man’s voice very well and a strong hunch told him that he wasn’t lying when he said that.
“Then, what is it? And where did it come from?” He asked.
The old man stared at him for a moment before he stepped forward .”Sit down. I will tell you something.”
“…”
“You don’t mind sitting on the ground, do you?” He asked.
“No, of course not,” Arthur replied as he immediately sat down.
“This was… I suppose it has been almost 105 years since that time. I still remember it as vividly as ever. The day I and my people were put on those accursed ships and forced to sail through this cursed river. There were thousands and thousands of ships… We were hundreds of thousands of people. All sentenced to death by that demonic family.”
“…” Arthur listened intently to the old man speak, his voice filled with nostalgia, regret, and anger all in the same tone.
“We sailed for hours that day, trying to find a way out of this river… But, that day, the river was far more violent than ever before. From the second and third floors, they made sure the Akora River would be at its most violent state. Our ships couldn’t hold on for long and many drowned before they could even make it halfway through. Some were destroyed by the hideous monsters lurking within the water.”
The story was grim, extremely so. So grim in fact that Arthur felt his face visibly darken just from hearing it. The image the old man painted in his head was far from a pleasant one.
“I tried to save us. Find a way out of it. I wanted at least a few to survive. But… I failed. We were all swept away to the Void like moths to the flame. Falling into this place, I expected death to take me away quickly as the darkness swallowed me. However, that never happened and I woke up in this place… Surrounded by the corpses of my people in a sea of blood.”
The moment Arthur heard that, he closed his eyes and breathed in. ‘Talk about a nightmare… He had seen some horrifying sights. All his people’s corpses around him and in such a dark world.’
“Wait, but if they all died, how are there so many people here?”
“Not all of them… There were exactly 50 survivors who somehow made it out alive.”
“50?? Out of hundreds of thousands?” Arthur blurted out. ‘That ratio… It’s ridiculous! How the hell did I survive that fall so easily then?’
Arthur was only getting more and more shocked with every passing second. This story was barely at the start and yet he was getting everything he assumed about this place and the old man Yonathan reshaped.
